300 Years

I believe in long, lengthy, never going to live long enough to actually serve, prison sentences. So I am delighted that 42-year old Ricardo Zamora will die in prison sometime way before he completes his 300 years prison term.

" Wednesday's sentence follows his guilty plea on Monday to a dozen counts of sexually assaulting his step daughter. There were six life sentences and six 20-year sentences handed down, which Judge Manuel Banales ruled would be served consecutively, meaning one at a time, not concurrently. Both he and the jury felt Zamora needed to be put away for good, to protect the victim in this case and prevent him from abusing anyone else."

I have to agree with him needing to be put away for good. A little more:

"On the first day of the punishment phase Monday, the now 18-year old victim told the jury of seven men and five women about the 10 years of abuse she endured from Ricardo Zamora that began with simple touching and progressed into various forms of sex.
"Basically, my childhood was ripped from my arms. I didn't have a childhood," the victim said. Jury foreman Jeff Davis said the courageous testimony was extremely compelling.
"What she had gone through has definitely been a traumatic experience that's shaken her life," Davis said. He also listened to Zamora testify that the victim had wanted the abuse. He even claimed his victim had ruined his life by coming forward.
"I don't see how she ruined his life when he tortured and tormented her and sexually abused her for 10 years." It took the jury a little more than hour to decide Zamora's fate. "Everyone agreed pretty much together right away on the maximum amount of time and the maximum fine."
"They were strong, and they did what was right," said prosecutor Sandra Eastwood. She said the sentence was a welcome change. "In the past, juries have been lenient with pedophiles, but I've seen a difference now, and I think it's very exciting, because we know there are many other pedophiles here in Corpus Christi, and when they hear about this, they will be afraid."
Eastwood also hopes the news of this case will empower other victims to confront their abusers and hold them accountable for the crimes they commit. Although the victim in this case is finally able to move on, she faces a tough battle ahead. She currently works two jobs to take care of the 18-month-old baby she had as a result of the abuse by Zamora.

All I have to say is, its about time. Had we been handing out prison terms even half as strong as this one- we'd be protected from the likes of people like Joseph Duncan, because they would be still sitting in their little cell behind bars and away from society.
