Daniel Callan, 25 must have thought he'd landed in heaven. He was a teacher- giving him unlimited access to children, and then he signed up to be a mentor with Big Brothers, Big Sisters- for which he volunteered for as a mentor for four months.
Police say Callan sexually abused one of his fifth-grade students at Appleton's St. Bernadette Elementary School.
Honestly, I'd have to say that children are likely better off with no mentor at all, than with a mentor like Callan. This clearly proves that we need to start looking closer at both our hired teachers, and those that volunteer with our children.
Police say Callan sexually abused one of his fifth-grade students at Appleton's St. Bernadette Elementary School.
The student, a 10-year-old boy, reported Daniel Callan, 25, of Menasha. Callan is charged with two counts of indecent exposure, one count of first-degree sexual assault and causing a child to view sexual activity, stemming from alleged incidents on April 1 and May 5.
He is due to appear Wednesday in Outagamie County Circuit Court.
Statements made in court have indicated Callan does not have a record.
Tracey Jenks, executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters, said Friday that Callan was matched with a child as a volunteer mentor through Big Brothers Big Sisters from Nov. 29, 2005, to March 14, 2006.
