Mistrial in Case of "mother" mutilating baby

Someone explain to me why it is that we even have an insanity plea. I mean honestly, if they are that "crazy" that they feel cutting the arms of their children is something God wants them to do- we ought to just kill them. You surely can't fix that. So, put them out of their misery.

I'm so tired of hearing how she had a cut on her own arm- like that is suppose to make the fact that she cut off this babies arms with a kitchen knife any more acceptable.

A judge declared a mistrial Saturday in the murder trial of a woman accused of fatally cutting the arms off her 10-month-old daughter.

Jurors deadlocked during the fourth day of deliberations in the case of Dena Schlosser, 37, who pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

"There was heated discussion, and tempers flared in the jury room," said juror Chris Penn as he left court. "It was a long ordeal, very tiring."

Ten against two. Actually ten against one- the other couldn't seem to make up their mind. To know that only ONE person was willing to demand that this woman be held responsible for her actions is mind boggling to say the least. What the hell has happened to the justice system when 10 people can be convinced that this woman should be found not guilty by reason of insanity?

Lilo...I am 100% with you on this one. I am still scratching my head and saying HUH? WTF ? I really don't give a damn about the insanity issue either. Someone that crazy needs killin'...as an act of mercy. That would be the humane thing to do.

I'm afraid that I am going to disagree with everyone here. I see it, much as I would see it if it was a young child. I mean if a person does not have the capacity to know what they are doing, how can we really expect to hold them responsible for it? If they don't have the capacity to understand, then they don't understand.
However, just like a very young child will grow up to understand, this woman with treatment and medication can be brought to a state where she can understand and where she won't be a danger. Likely when that happens, she will be in a lot of pain.
I know I am in the minority, but just wanted to state my opinion.

You know when you UNDERSTAND "mental disorders" and insanity there is NO CURE! There are ways to cope with it, learn to live with it, use it to your benifit when you get tired of a crying baby and CUT HER ARMS OFF! Drug addicts are curible disease is curible POISON IVY is curible but not insanity! People who are "insane" are smart and they learn how to manipulate and fool everyone! That is why serial rapist and muderers either never get caught or it takes a long time to catch them and when they do get caught it is because they are ready to get caught. So, i said all that to say this. There is NEVER GOING TO BE A CURE FOR THIS HORRIBLE CRIME THIS WOMAN COMMITTED! She can get forgivness from God if she would admit SHE did it and not someone she said was God told her to! I feel NO compassion for her AT ALL!
btw where is the father during all this. I havent read anything about him.Maybe i missed it.

I see both sides. I have known severly schizophrenic people who are so out of touch with reality it's bizarre and very sad. They all seem to have a fixation with God in some way, don't know why. What she did is heinous, I'm not condoning it, but she could be truly sick. Or not. My heart breaks for that little baby. What I will never understand is why God allows these things to happen in the first place, but that's off topic. Medication and care may help her, but many mentally ill people stop taking their meds the minute they feel better. There had to be some evidence of this before, patient records, a psychiatrist maybe? And good question Renee, where was the father? If he knew she was ill or whatever, why didn't he bring it to someone's attention or take the infant himself? These cases leave so many questions and not enough answers.

Yes, lots of question unanswered. I do agree with you on some people can get help through medication. I was probably a little harsh last night, as i was furious when i read mistrial.My 11 year old is bipolar and i spend everyday using methods of behaviour modification to help her.She is medicated and that has helped alot.I definetly understand mental illness and that there is hope for some people. Most people with Mental Illness do not think about the concequences of the actions or also called ODD.But does that mean there doesn't need to be consequence? SO MANY times people use mental illness as an excuse for things that they have done or poor decision making (my daughter does it all the time) but we have to way out the facts and not let people continue to hurt, kill, sexually abuse etc. other HUMAN BEINGS and use an excuse like insanity.
I think that insanity should not be a plea in the court system it's either guilty or noguilty.You did it or you didn't,no matter the motive. If found guilty then the facility where they would spend their jail time should evaluate the individuals mental condition. If they are found to have a mental condition, put them in a mental facility until they are "better" and then send their butts back to JAIL! But thats my opinion!

Oh, if only it could be that simple! I do agree that people cop out too easily and don't accept responsibility for their actions. When sane people lie and use the insanity defense to get out of paying for a crime it makes it tougher on those who are insane. And a lot depends on the quality of your legal representation. Here is a quote I have unfortunately found to be true:
"They're putting on witnesses who they know are lying. They concealed exonerating evidence. Don't we have enough criminal conduct by the prosecutors to put them behind bars?"
"It doesn't work that way," the lawyer laughed. "The law is just for the little people. When we break the rules we go to jail. When they break the rules they go to lunch...."

Reading the news today, I was taken back to see that the Florida Sex Offender registry was being criticized. Having had the chance to look at it previously, I had always found it rather informative, and well organized. The issue that many are having with it now wouldn't be noticed by the occasional browser on the site. Which makes it even worse. A review of the FSR has found some rather unsettling statistics: The News-Press analyzed the Florida Department of Law Enforcement database of 36,306 sex offenders and found: • 9,205 of them are incarcerated • 7,037 have run away or can't be found • 824 have been deported; and • 516 are dead. Of the 15,573 sex offenders listed as released and not on parole or probation, only 11,355 of those actually live in Florida.
