Aron Pritchard, Update

Months ago, I brought you a case of a "father" who had placed his two young children in a dyer and turned it on.

Thanks to a recent comment on that post, there is a update to the case, which is just as disturbing if not more so. I know... you're asking what on earth could be worse than putting a 2 year old and a 3 year old in a dyer.

Aron Pritchard, 27, was jailed Friday after prosecutors dismissed the original child abuse case and filed a new one, adding 10 sexual assault counts to the original charges. The charges are filed in the alternate, and depending on a jury's findings, Pritchard could face multiple life sentences.

I can almost understand dropping the charges for more serious ones... but I can not even begin to understand why on earth the Judge in this case LOWERED bail. Especially after having read this part:
Pritchard is charged with four counts each of aggravated sodomy and indecent liberties with a child, two counts of rape, and single counts of abuse of a child and aggravated endangering a child.

These aren't "simple" molestation charges... it's RAPE and SODOMY. And he gets a reduced bail? What on earth is the Judge thinking?

I suppose we should be thankful that the judge didn't give in completely- this perv was asking for even less bail-
In asking the court to release him on his original $5,000 bond, Pritchard noted he had not fled the jurisdiction and made every court appearance. His court-appointed attorney, Kiehl Rathbun, also told the court Pritchard has an infant son and he needed "to be a father to his child."

Magistrate Judge Randy McEwen acknowledged Pritchard's cooperation but said he also had to consider public safety. McEwen reduced the bond from $100,000 to $75,000. When Pritchard was originally charged in the previous abuse case, he was released on $750 bond.

Personally, I wish that ALL of the charges would stand, both for the dyer part and now for the sexual abuse. This man is nothing short of a monster and needs to be locked up for life.

Guided by practical experience and not theory, especially in medicine Kennedy hate crimes rider may doom Hatch's sex offender bill By Robert Gehrke The Salt Lake Tribune WASHINGTON - A fight over federal hate crimes legislation could torpedo Sen. Orrin Hatch's push to strengthen the nation's sex-offender registries and clamp down on sex crimes. The Senate Judiciary Committee gave quick, unanimous approval to Hatch's bill Thursday, clearing its way for consideration by the full Senate. But Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., said he plans to try to attach language to a bill that would require tougher sentences, provide federal assistance and offer grants to prosecute hate crimes - those motivated by hatred for a race, religion, gender or sexual orientation. Florida Sex Offender Registry

Reading the news today, I was taken back to see that the Florida Sex Offender registry was being criticized. Having had the chance to look at it previously, I had always found it rather informative, and well organized. The issue that many are having with it now wouldn't be noticed by the occasional browser on the site. Which makes it even worse. A review of the FSR has found some rather unsettling statistics: The News-Press analyzed the Florida Department of Law Enforcement database of 36,306 sex offenders and found: • 9,205 of them are incarcerated • 7,037 have run away or can't be found • 824 have been deported; and • 516 are dead. Of the 15,573 sex offenders listed as released and not on parole or probation, only 11,355 of those actually live in Florida. Sex offender registries can only be usefully, and only fully do what they where designed to do when they are updated, maintained and monitored continuously. When you are relying on the SO registries to monitors how safe your...
