Carnival of The True Crime Blogs

Once again, it's time for the Carnival of the True Crime Blogs, this week however- I have the pleasure of hosting, so here's a little peek at what the very best True Crime bloggers have been writing on this week:

Trench at CrimeNews has the story of Michelle Dohn

Michelle Dohm is a grade school teacher from Thurmont, MD. who was arrested and convicted for sending threatening notes to some students at her school. Even after she had been under investigation it is alleged that she still sent correspondence out to some of the students.

Now the news is that she was in a court hearing today and was ordered to have no more contact with her victims.

HomeSweetHome has the tale of a deadly fire, and a man named Robert L. Drown Jr

Two weeks ago fire department officials were called to a mobile home for a report of a fire. Inside the home, the fire department found 3 bodies.

The home was occupied by Jennifer Ison, 31. One of the bodies found was identified as Mrs. Ison. Jennifer Ison had two daughters Shannah, 10, and Marissa, 3. The other two bodies were identified as the children.

Teacher Smackdown has the story of a recently released sex offender, who happens to have been a teacher too.

Former Parma, Idaho middle school teacher Randy Eddy, 37, was convicted on two counts of sexual battery involving a 15-year-old female student. After serving serving six months of his original 10-year prison sentence he was granted parole after taking part in a “boot camp” and sexual offender treatment program.

Stephen from Crime Scene Blog has the case of a missing teenager in Missing: Victoria Ashley, aka “Tori”

Wednesday, May 16, 2007 started out like any other day for the teenager. She left her home for school, arriving that morning. But things took a strange turn sometime during that morning, which led to her disappearance. Later in the morning, her cell phone was found, but Tori was gone.

Verifiable or provable by means of observation or experiment: empirical laws. Guided by practical experience and not theory, especially in medicine Kennedy hate crimes rider may doom Hatch's sex offender bill By Robert Gehrke The Salt Lake Tribune WASHINGTON - A fight over federal hate crimes legislation could torpedo Sen. Orrin Hatch's push to strengthen the nation's sex-offender registries and clamp down on sex crimes. The Senate Judiciary Committee gave quick, unanimous approval to Hatch's bill Thursday, clearing its way for consideration by the full Senate. But Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., said he plans to try to attach language to a bill that would require tougher sentences, provide federal assistance and offer grants to prosecute hate crimes - those motivated by hatred for a race, religion, gender or sexual orientation. Florida Sex Offender Registry

Reading the news today, I was taken back to see that the Florida Sex Offender registry was being criticized. Having had the chance to look at it previously, I had always found it rather informative, and well organized. The issue that many are having with it now wouldn't be noticed by the occasional browser on the site. Which makes it even worse. A review of the FSR has found some rather unsettling statistics: The News-Press analyzed the Florida Department of Law Enforcement database of 36,306 sex offenders and found: • 9,205 of them are incarcerated • 7,037 have run away or can't be found • 824 have been deported; and • 516 are dead. Of the 15,573 sex offenders listed as released and not on parole or probation, only 11,355 of those actually live in Florida. Sex offender registries can only be usefully, and only fully do what they where designed to do when they are updated, maintained and monitored continuously. When you are relying on the SO registries to monitors how safe your...
