What's on AMW this week

This week the team at America's Most Wanted is covering the following cases:

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
ALEXIS FLORES…It was a nightmare come to life for a tight-knit Philadelphia, Pennsylvania neighborhood. A 5-year-old girl, Ariana DeJesus, was found sexually assaulted and strangled to death in an empty apartment complex near her house on August 3, 2000. Ariana had gone missing a few days before she was found, and the community was outraged by her horrifying murder. For years, the case went unsolved, until March 2007, when the FBI in Philadelphia got the break they were looking for -- a DNA match from a convicted criminal in another state.

Manhattan, New York
UNKNOWN MIDTOWN JANE DOE KILLER…When an old Manhattan apartment building once known as a magnet for pimps and prostitutes went under construction, workers dug up something horrifying -- a young woman's skeleton. Now, detectives are piecing together clues, hoping to find out who the woman was, whether or not she was sucked into the notorious lifestyle of the apartment building's residents -- and who killed her.

Toledo, Ohio
DAVID SKELLY…Cops say the sexual abuse of an 11-year-old girl was going on for almost eight months before anybody figured out what was happening. Now, a dangerous fugitive has disappeared.

Hyattsville, Maryland
PEDRO REYES…Pedro Montiel Reyes was living with his girlfriend for several months in her Hyattsville, Maryland apartment, when cops say he became irrationally jealous. After accusing her of cheating in March 2005, cops say Reyes took his rage to a whole new level -- and now he's at the center of a murder investigation.

Walton, Kentucky
LONNIE CRABTREE…Lonnie Ted Crabtree had what many people would consider a nice life. But apparently he wasn't satisfied with his life, and went looking for a little something extra on the Internet. Unfortunately for him, he got a big surprise when he was done surfing the web.

These are just a few of the cases that will be airing this week, for information on some of the other cases, or to view more information, please see the AMW.com website. AMW airs on Saturday nights, at 9pm on your local Fox Station.

Guided by practical experience and not theory, especially in medicine Kennedy hate crimes rider may doom Hatch's sex offender bill By Robert Gehrke The Salt Lake Tribune WASHINGTON - A fight over federal hate crimes legislation could torpedo Sen. Orrin Hatch's push to strengthen the nation's sex-offender registries and clamp down on sex crimes. The Senate Judiciary Committee gave quick, unanimous approval to Hatch's bill Thursday, clearing its way for consideration by the full Senate. But Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., said he plans to try to attach language to a bill that would require tougher sentences, provide federal assistance and offer grants to prosecute hate crimes - those motivated by hatred for a race, religion, gender or sexual orientation. Florida Sex Offender Registry

Reading the news today, I was taken back to see that the Florida Sex Offender registry was being criticized. Having had the chance to look at it previously, I had always found it rather informative, and well organized. The issue that many are having with it now wouldn't be noticed by the occasional browser on the site. Which makes it even worse. A review of the FSR has found some rather unsettling statistics: The News-Press analyzed the Florida Department of Law Enforcement database of 36,306 sex offenders and found: • 9,205 of them are incarcerated • 7,037 have run away or can't be found • 824 have been deported; and • 516 are dead. Of the 15,573 sex offenders listed as released and not on parole or probation, only 11,355 of those actually live in Florida. Sex offender registries can only be usefully, and only fully do what they where designed to do when they are updated, maintained and monitored continuously. When you are relying on the SO registries to monitors how safe your...
