I'm not all that old. Oldish, almost. But not old. Still young enough that while growing up, my father had a cell phone. But old enough that it was really called a car phone, and not a cell phone- and it was almost as big as the car itself. Still, that's not OLD. It's not been that long since I was a kid myself. And yet, every day I find myself in this odd position of wondering just when it was that parents generally became stupid. Not "too lazy to interact with their children", not "too involved in work to spend time teaching their kids"- but literally- stupid, horrible parents.
I know it started sometime prior to my time as a kid- although it wasn't on the grand scale that it is now. Just look at some of the quality parents we seem to be producing:
Mother Bought Guns for Pennsylvania Boy Charged With School Plot
Seriously, buying a troubled teen guns?
And, as if we needed more contestants for stupid/bad parent of the year, we have Nicholas and Lola Kampf. They kidnapped their own child (who was 19 at the time) and attempted to take her out of state in order to force her to abort her child.
Sadly, they have fierce competition for the "Worlds Worst Parent" award- Misti Mina Hassan. She gave her son a prescription anti-anxiety drug overdose which resulted in his death. He was 9. She followed up her bad parenting skills with a failed (half assed) attempt at suicide. To bad she succeeded on the first task, and then failed on the second. I'd have much rather it had been the other way around.
