Letters from Myspace

I told you before about how NBC has swapped catching predators for gambling with them, so the fact that Shahram (Shawn) "Sheiky" Sheikhan is a convicted sex offender should be no surprise. Now, to be fair his 1995 conviction didn't land him on a public notification system... but it did almost get him deported. <--pdf of deportation from Nevada Courts, Evidence Finding here, More Legal Docs here-- and it's been written about by enough media outlets that NBC can't claim they didn't know.

But that's not my point. Cause we've already talked about that. Instead, I have yet another complaint... You see, because he has a MySpace account, I thought it in the best interest to notify MySpace that he had a sexually related conviction for crimes against a minor. So, I reported his page, and sent along a good half dozen related links as evidence of his conviction. And they responded...

Hum... the content has been removed? Interesting, because when I click over to his profile- I still see it, which usually is only the case if it still exists. Which leads me to believe that... OMG MySpace LIED! I know, freaking shocking isn't it? But, I mean- we can't be shocked- not really. After all, if a Network that touts itself as being the start of the movement behind getting sexual predators off the net can turn around and have one starring in a featured show (and getting paid/making money to do it) then we can't be surprised that another company would lie about removing him from their network.

Verifiable or provable by means of observation or experiment: empirical laws. Guided by practical experience and not theory, especially in medicine Kennedy hate crimes rider may doom Hatch's sex offender bill By Robert Gehrke The Salt Lake Tribune WASHINGTON - A fight over federal hate crimes legislation could torpedo Sen. Orrin Hatch's push to strengthen the nation's sex-offender registries and clamp down on sex crimes. The Senate Judiciary Committee gave quick, unanimous approval to Hatch's bill Thursday, clearing its way for consideration by the full Senate. But Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., said he plans to try to attach language to a bill that would require tougher sentences, provide federal assistance and offer grants to prosecute hate crimes - those motivated by hatred for a race, religion, gender or sexual orientation. The White ...

Florida Sex Offender Registry

Reading the news today, I was taken back to see that the Florida Sex Offender registry was being criticized. Having had the chance to look at it previously, I had always found it rather informative, and well organized. The issue that many are having with it now wouldn't be noticed by the occasional browser on the site. Which makes it even worse. A review of the FSR has found some rather unsettling statistics: The News-Press analyzed the Florida Department of Law Enforcement database of 36,306 sex offenders and found: • 9,205 of them are incarcerated • 7,037 have run away or can't be found • 824 have been deported; and • 516 are dead. Of the 15,573 sex offenders listed as released and not on parole or probation, only 11,355 of those actually live in Florida. Sex offender registries can only be usefully, and only fully do what they where designed to do when they are updated, maintained and monitored continuously. When you are relying on the SO registries to monitors how safe your...
