AMW, US Marshals go after molester

Both America's Most Wanted, and the US Marshals have set their eyes on Frederick McLean... an alleged child molester from San Diego who they believe victimized numerous children over a 20 year span. The 57 year old former car restorer and avid outdoorsman was first investigated in 2004 when a member of The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses went to police and reported that he'd sexually abused her as a child.

Police say that McLean left town in a small dark-colored pickup truck, but that he also may have a 1955 Chevy hot rod, which could possibly still be in a storage unit if he hasn't sold it by now.

Authorities maintain that he may have changed his physical appearance and purchased a new set of identity documents. He is also believed to have armed himself with a gun.

Police say that McLean could still be in north San Diego County or Riverside County areas. They also speculate that given his extensive outdoor experience he could also be in the Cuyamaca Mountains or in the Anza-Borrego desert regions. US Marshals say that McLean would probably be living alone or in an isolated situation although acquaintances say that McLean is likely to keep an eye on his family from afar. --AMW

According to San Diego 6 news, US Marshals have now stepped up their search for McLean, and are asking for anyone with information on the alleged child molester to come forward.

The U.S. Marshals Service in San Diego stepped up its manhunt Thursday for an alleged sexual predator on the agency's 15 "most wanted" fugitives list.

Authorities asked the public for help in finding Frederick McLean, 57, who is sought on multiple counts of sexual assault on a child.

Supervising Deputy U.S. Marshal Steve Jurman of the San Diego Fugitive Task Force said "multiple counts" is an understatement.

In my own rambling- Of more interest than just being an outdoorsman, McLean was a former Elder at The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, and used his position in the cult to prey on victims ranging in age from 5 to 11. Given the tight network that the congregations offer, and the far reaching arms of the 'church'- it's a world wide organization... McLean showing up in a community and portraying himself as a member of the church using a fake name shouldn't be seen as out of the realm of possibilities. AMW described him as someone who should be "considered armed and dangerous and may be desperate in his need to sexually molest young girls." JW's trusting and closely knit fellowship would give him ample chances to find a congregation to blend in with, and quickly establish a level of trust in which he could continue his deviant crimes.

Guided by practical experience and not theory, especially in medicine Kennedy hate crimes rider may doom Hatch's sex offender bill By Robert Gehrke The Salt Lake Tribune WASHINGTON - A fight over federal hate crimes legislation could torpedo Sen. Orrin Hatch's push to strengthen the nation's sex-offender registries and clamp down on sex crimes. The Senate Judiciary Committee gave quick, unanimous approval to Hatch's bill Thursday, clearing its way for consideration by the full Senate. But Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., said he plans to try to attach language to a bill that would require tougher sentences, provide federal assistance and offer grants to prosecute hate crimes - those motivated by hatred for a race, religion, gender or sexual orientation. Florida Sex Offender Registry

Reading the news today, I was taken back to see that the Florida Sex Offender registry was being criticized. Having had the chance to look at it previously, I had always found it rather informative, and well organized. The issue that many are having with it now wouldn't be noticed by the occasional browser on the site. Which makes it even worse. A review of the FSR has found some rather unsettling statistics: The News-Press analyzed the Florida Department of Law Enforcement database of 36,306 sex offenders and found: • 9,205 of them are incarcerated • 7,037 have run away or can't be found • 824 have been deported; and • 516 are dead. Of the 15,573 sex offenders listed as released and not on parole or probation, only 11,355 of those actually live in Florida. Sex offender registries can only be usefully, and only fully do what they where designed to do when they are updated, maintained and monitored continuously. When you are relying on the SO registries to monitors how safe your...
