St Louis Shooting-- Timothy Hendron

For those without access to a police scanner in St Louis, you can listen live online at Radio Reference.com

The ABB Power Plant in St Louis came under attack this morning, when at 6:30 a man walked into the transformer plant entered with a AK47 and opened fire. The employees still in the plant are being told by police and rescue workers to stay put via text message and phone calls. It is presently unclear if the shooter was injured, his current whereabouts, but he is believed to be a disgruntled worker who possibly had worked at the plant for 25 years. Neighbors of Power plant saying they heard shooting this morning. That a man with gun shot two employees in the parking lot this morning, at a range of about 8 feet away.

About 6:30 a.m. today, police got a call from a woman, very upset, who said that someone came in to the east side of the building and started shooting. "They are still shooting," a dispatcher told police officers rushing to the scene at 6:34 a.m.

The scene was so chaotic that even the descriptions of the gunman were confusing to police. At first, a witness described the gunman only as a black man, about 5-foot-8 or 5-foot-9, wearing a tan coat and carrying a semiautomatic weapon. Later, a company supervisor called police to give the name of a disgruntled worker who had possibly been recently fired. That worker was a white man.

At least one victim is believed to be dead, and at least 3 others injured.

Orrin Hatch's push to strengthen the nation's sex-offender registries and clamp down on sex crimes. The Senate Judiciary Committee gave quick, unanimous approval to Hatch's bill Thursday, clearing its way for consideration by the full Senate. But Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., said he plans to try to attach language to a bill that would require tougher sentences, provide federal assistance and offer grants to prosecute hate crimes - those motivated by hatred for a race, religion, gender or sexual orientation. Florida Sex Offender Registry

Reading the news today, I was taken back to see that the Florida Sex Offender registry was being criticized. Having had the chance to look at it previously, I had always found it rather informative, and well organized. The issue that many are having with it now wouldn't be noticed by the occasional browser on the site. Which makes it even worse. A review of the FSR has found some rather unsettling statistics: The News-Press analyzed the Florida Department of Law Enforcement database of 36,306 sex offenders and found: • 9,205 of them are incarcerated • 7,037 have run away or can't be found • 824 have been deported; and • 516 are dead. Of the 15,573 sex offenders listed as released and not on parole or probation, only 11,355 of those actually live in Florida. Sex offender registries can only be usefully, and only fully do what they where designed to do when they are updated, maintained and monitored continuously. When you are relying on the SO registries to monitors how safe your
